What is Aikido?

Aikido means the way of harmony. What we practice is a style called Yoshinkan, which means house of cultivating spirits. Aikido is primarily a defensive martial art from Japan that does not meet force with resistance or brute strength. Instead it redirects an aggressor’s force with well timed flowing circular movements that lead an attacker off their center of balance. Joint locks, throws or pins then effectively control or immobilize the attack regardless of their size or strength.

What should I expect?

A typical children’s class integrates warm-ups, basic movements or “Kihon Dosa”, techniques and games. Older children study the “kihon dosa” basic movements more in depth and learn how to apply this to technique both on the tatami floor and if needed on the playground.
